GT1’s Root Bay Lithium Resource Places Root into Contention as a Standalone Project

Green Technology Metals has completely transformed its Root project in Ontario, Canada, with a nearly tripling of its resources after defining a resource estimate for the Root Bay deposit.
The addition of the 8.1Mt Root Bay Resource, which also features a higher grade of 1.32% Li2O, takes the total resource at the Root project up to a solid 12.6Mt at 1.21% Li2O and also increases the company’s resource base across its Ontario projects up to 22.5Mt.
Not bad at all for a project where the company had started diamond drilling just nine months ago.
And as attractive as the resource upgrade might be, Green Technology Metals (ASX:GT1) isn’t anywhere close to being done with further resource growth expected along trend at Root Bay and across the broader Root project area.
“This is just the beginning for our Root Lithium Project and we are very pleased with ongoing drilling indicating further extension potential along the East-West trend,” chief executive officer Luke Cox said.
“We still have a lot of untested ground to cover and with time we hope to continue to grow our quality hard rock spodumene lithium resource base in Ontario.
“The Mineral Resource base at Root has now reached critical mass and is transformational for GT1, as it allows us to assess the potential for Root to become a stand-alone project hosting its own concentrator in line with our corporate strategy.”
Maiden Root Bay Inferred Resource
The definition of the Root Bay Inferred Resource of 8.1Mt at 1.32% Li2O and 35 parts per million (ppm) tantalum follows the company drilling 36 holes totalling 9,174.7m from late February, which revealed multiple, shallow-dipping LCT pegmatites up to 18m thick, with exceptional lithium grades up to 1.73% Li2O.
In all, 13 stacked pegmatites were identified and defined to over 200m depth and 1,300m along the Root Bay trend, with a northerly strike length of up to 300m.
The resource was constrained within a pit shell generated through the Micromine Pit Optimiser module with tonnage and grade reported above a 0.2% Li2O cut-off.
The initial hole drilled at Root Bay testing the down dip mineralisation continuity was not used in the resource estimate, which raises the potential for growth in this direction.
Ongoing and future plans
Resource definition drilling is now underway at Roots Bay to test open mineralisation trends and add to the spodumene resource base.
Infill drilling will also be undertaken to improve resource confidence – to the Indicated category or better – for future economic assessment.
This will be carried out in parallel with studies to support necessary modifying factors, waste characterisation, metallurgical recoveries, and geotechnical assessments.
Field exploration has commenced over an expanded untested exploration area at Root, to identify additional priority drill targets.
While initial exploration had focused on the McCombe, Morrison and Root Bay target areas, the large area surrounding these targets remains underexplored and highly prospective for new LCT pegmatite target areas.
This is particularly true given that Root Bay was thought to be just a simple outcrop occurrence before the company started drill testing at depth.
