Iberdrola Australia has agreed to supply all of Woolworths Group’s operations in South Australia with 100% renewable electricity.
The agreement, in place until 31 December 2030, will ensure retail group Woolworths’ almost 70 supermarkets, 17 Big W stores and regional distribution centres in South Australia are powered by green energy.
The electricity will be supplied from Iberdrola Australia’s newly built Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park.

The 320MW facility comprises 50 wind turbines and 250,000 solar panels with an annual output of 0.9TWh renewable electricity.
Woolworths Group CEO, Brad Banducci said: “South Australia will be the first state where every one of our sites is powered by green energy, and we’re excited to use renewable energy generated locally to reduce the footprint of our stores from Roxby Downs to Renmark…
“Our customers want us to make shopping better for the planet, and renewable energy is just one of the ways we’re boosting sustainability…”
According to Iberdrola Australia, Woolworths Group represents about one per cent of the country’s total energy use and therefore plans to replace traditional energy contracts with greener agreements over the next three years, ultimately being 100% renewable-powered by 2025.
Iberdrola Australia CEO and managing director, Ross Rolfe, AO said: “We are delighted to be supporting Woolworths Group in their sustainability journey by providing their retail stores in South Australia with 100% green energy. Woolworths is demonstrating that together we can decarbonise our electricity sector, preserve our natural environment and create jobs in Australia’s regional communities…”
South Australian premier Peter Malinauskas congratulated Woolworths Group on the initiative and emphasised the role of private capital in leading the transition to cleaner energy sources.
