All your lithium news, Wednesday January 25.
In a blog post on Tuesday, Tesla – the world’s biggest producer of electric vehicles, announced it was investing more than US$3.6bn to continue growing its Nevada assembly plant.
The money would help to develop a 100GWh 4,680 cell factory – with enough capacity to produce batteries for 2 million light duty vehicles annually and a dedicated factory to make its Semi truck.
The major EV manufacturer’s move to produce even more batteries is likely representative of the automotive industries general belief in accelerating EV sales, which will in turn drive lithium demand up.
This also neatly lends credence to Abermarles’ claim that the price it expects to receive for lithium this year will jump 40% over 2022 levels.
According to Abermarles’ head of energy storage division, Eric Norris, lithium pricing needs to remain elevated in order to support the incentives required to take on investment risks.
“”The (lithium) market is tighter than it was last year,” he said in a 2023 strategic update presentation.
“There’s significant supply coming on, but the demand growth is more significant.”
Albemarle’s new forecast is 3.7m t lithium demand (LCE) by 2030. It shows what unconstrained demand, ie automakers’ dream EV scenarios, can do to the data
Benchmark’s base, ie what will likely to come pass, is 2.4m t of lithium

Who’s got news out?
KAIROS MINERALS (ASX:KAI)
A new lithium anomaly called Crystal Palace has been identified 5km along strike of Global Lithium’s Manna Li-Ta deposit.
The anomaly is coincident with newly-identified pegmatites and were identified as part of a 6,000-sample geochemical programme still underway at the northern half of Kairos’ large Roe Hills tenement package.
KAI is hoping the program will provide a reliable foundation dataset for lithium, gold and nickel targeting.
RIVERSGOLD (ASX:RGL)
Expanded geochemical sampling on the southern portion of the Mt Holland project tenement has defined a clear 900m long lithium anomaly.
RGL’s CEO Julian Ford says these are the first exploration results generated from the ground immediately to the east of Covalent Lithium’s Mt Holland lithium mine since Kidman in 2016.
The company is now looking at getting on the ground and start drilling this quarter.
MARQUEE RESOURCES (ASX:MQR)
MQR’S final samples from the Kibby Basin lithium project have returned mineralised intervals containing up to 924 ppm lithium with greater than 300 ppm lithium over thicknesses in excess of 450m.
Lithium mineralisation is fairly consistent in both thickness and grade in the two boreholes, which are 2000 m apart, suggesting extensive lateral occurrence across the basin.
Marquee has now started planning for a 2023 exploration program at the project.
AFRICAN GOLD (ASX:A1G)
Field exploration has discovered outcropping pegmatite intrusions, together with coincident lithium, caesium, tantalum (LCT) and rubidium anomalism in stream sediment samples on A1G’s Agboville project.
Stream sediment results have confirmed LCT anomalism across two zones totalling over 150km2 coincident to the observed pegmatites
GLOBAL LITHIUM RESOURCES (ASX:GL1)
A metallurgical processing program has started at the Manna lithium project with resources engineering firm Wave International appointed to undertake the study in conjunction with GL1.
Wave International is set to define and test the metallurgical upgrade process to produce a spodumene concentrate for Manna.
Outcomes of study will underpin the Manna feasibility study, scheduled to begin sometime this quarter.
RED DIRT METALS (ASX:RDT)
RDT has pulled up its ‘best intersection to date’ at the Mt Ida lithium project from the Sister Sam pegmatite, which returned 49.5m at 1.45% Li2O from 387.5m.
More than 20 intersections are with the labs undergoing analysis with expected results in the next 6-12 weeks.
The planned drill programs will cover more than 200 holes and 60,000m throughout 2023.
LITHIUM POWER INTERNATIONAL (ASX:LPI)
LPI has completed the RC drilling component of its inaugural drilling program at the East Kirup lithium prospect in the Greenbushes region of Western Australia.
Ten holes were drilled for a total of 573m and several 2m zones have indicated the potential for pegmatites, after early drilling intercepted quartz, pink potassic feldspar, biotite and tourmaline.
These samples have now been submitted to the lab for analysis.
Meanwhile, diamond drilling is set to complete this week having drilled four holes for 400m.
