Corazon Mining is zeroing in on three priority drilling targets at its historic Miriam nickel sulphide project in WA’s Eastern Goldfields, with recent exploration outlining three initial prospects at the site.

Nickel sulphides were discovered at the project all the way back in 1969, but it’s also prospective for lithium and gold.

But it remains woefully underexplored.  Recent moving loop ground electromagnetic survey covering 2.4km of the Miriam trend indicate large conductive bodies, interpreted to be barren sulphidic sediments, located immediately to the east of and beneath the targeted ultramafic basal contact were found in the survey.

They have an impact on the capacity of previous ground and downhole EM surveys, providing Corazon (ASX:CZN) with certainty past geophysics have not properly tested the Miriam trend.

Remodelling of past ground and downhole EM surveys on the back of the Corazon EM survey has opened the interpretation of a large ultramafic lava paleo-channels, effectively traps for nickel sulphide mineralisation, which will be the focus of the next phase of exploration at Miriam.

Three targets

The first and most obvious target is the Main Channel, which hosts the historic Miriam nickel sulphide deposit where Anaconda’s discovery hole in 1969 came in at 9.6m at 5.6% nickel.

Deeper intercepts included 12.5m at 0.56% Ni and 3.2m at 2.59% Ni and 0.52% Cu.

Past drilling and geophysics have defined a precise drill target at 250m below surface, with channel interpretations from Corazon’s recent geophysics matching perfectly with detailed drillhole logging.

But two other large komatiite channels – the main source of nickel sulphides in the rich Kambalda region – have presented as targets.

The North Channel is yet to be drill tested below 100m, but contains mapped gossans and soil geochemical anomalism at surface. Detailed ground magnetics and gravity surveys are underway to map the area before drilling.

The South Channel is also not well drill tested and will be mapped in greater detail. Deeper drilling has previously intersected nickel sulphides including 0.3m at 3.05% Ni and 1.16m at 1.5% Ni on the northern margin of the interpreted channel. This channel remains open to the south.

What’s next?

The ground magnetic and gravity surveys testing the basal contact at Miriam are expected to be completed and incorporated into drill hole targeting in April.

Corazon says it will seek approvals from the West Australian Government to commence drilling at Miriam once the targets are fully defined.

Meanwhile the explorer is also sampling surface soils in the aim of finding lithium bearing pegmatites under thin cover across the 6km by 1.5km project area, with results due in the coming weeks.

Miriam is located around 10km south-southwest of Coolgardie on a trend of ultramafics characterised by the Miriam and Nepean nickel deposits, and was last explored in depth in the early to mid 2000s.
