All your lithium news, Wednesday November 30.
If it wasn’t already clear that lithium is still very much a thriving sector, then perhaps the strong performance of stocks chasing the battery metal on the ASX today amidst ongoing efforts across the globe to ensure supply security might be enough to convince sceptics.
Just to the north, Indonesian Deputy Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Septian Hario Seto told an industry conference on Tuesday that the country was building a 60,000tpa lithium hydroxide plant in the heart of the nickel industry in Morowali.
And just to reinforce the point – though it isn’t quite lithium, Indonesia will also start in January construction of a 80,000tpa battery anode material plant.
Reuters quoted him as saying that Indonesia was building an ecosystem and not just producing nickel and cobalt based components.
However, he did not elaborate on where the lithium ore for the hydroxide plant would come from as Indonesia does not have its own mine.
Meanwhile, South African diversified miner Sibanye-Stillwater has given the greenlight to the €588m ($909m) Keliber lithium project in Finland.
The company aims to be Europe’s first fully integrated lithium hydroxide producer with capacity of 15,000tpa from resources totalling 17Mt of scalable lithium oxide.
It is worth noting at this stage that these developments represent just a small slice of all the lithium developments that are in progress across the globe as countries and companies attempt to build a supply chain independent of China.
So for lithium companies to perform well despite all this activity is testament to investors ongoing confidence in the sector.

Lithium outperformed today with 67 companies – or half of our watchlist – putting on weight while just 25 companies were in the red.
Who’s got news out?
Shares in the company soared today after it reported that soil sampling had identified five extensive, strong lithium geochemical anomalies at its Central Pilbara gold-lithium project in Western Australia.
While none of these areas have been previously explored, they have each been defined by lithium values in excess of 150 parts per million and supported by all of the key multi-elements, including caesium, tantalum, tin and rubidium.
New Age has initiated a helicopter supported reconnaissance program to assess the priority areas in more detail.
Pure Resources has picked up a 160km2 exploration area that is prospective for lithium about 65km northeast of Patriot Battery Metals’ Corvette discovery in Quebec’s Superior Province.
The new claims cover part of the 70 km long Laforge Greenstone Belt that has structural and lithological analogies to the nearby La Grande Greenstone Belt, which hosts Corvette.
It intends to carry out aerial reconnaissance mapping and sampling in the company weeks.
Voltaic Strategic Resources (ASX:VSR)
The company has identified lookalikes of the third-party Yinnietharra/Malinda lithium discovery using hyperspectral remote sensing (HRS) survey at its Ti Tree project.
Several perceived outcropping pegmatite swarms have been identified from LANSAT satellite imagery within the anomalous HRS target zone.
Voltaic now plans to carry out shallow auger drilling to test the priority targets.
