  • Are weakening cobalt prices about to get a boost?
  • ASX lithium stocks bouncing back as more evidence emerges of long term supply shortfall

Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, manganese, magnesium, and vanadium.

For the longest time, solid-state batteries have been the holy grail technology for electric vehicle makers.

Compared to the incumbent liquid electrolyte technology, solid-state offers:

  • longer driving range
  • lower raw material costs (reduced/ no nickel, graphite and cobalt)
  • higher energy density
  • increased safety (non-flammable)
  • and faster charging

If it sounds too good to be true that’s because it is — for now, anyway.

WoodMac says that “while the promise of solid-state has persisted for over a decade there has been little sign of significant success”.

But there’s a newish kid on the block called ‘semi-solid’, which – while not as good is solid-state – still beats current batteries on most metrics.

“The liquid electrolyte adds more weight and volume to the cell, meaning the improvement in cell energy, and therefore EV range, is restricted – though still an improvement on current cells,” WoodMac says.

Two major Chinese automakers, NIO and Dongfeng Motor, have planted their flags in the semi-solid camp, it says.

“They have each announced production of EVs next year using the tech, supplied by WeLion and Ganfeng Lithium, respectively.

“While the cell energy is less than what full solid-state may promise, the compromise technology is a leap forward that can be manufactured at scale – possibly leaving solid-state redundant.”

But what about that lithium supply shortfall?

Semi-solid and solid-state replaces graphite with a lithium metal anode, which means even more lithium demand in an already constrained market.

“The luxury vehicle segment alone could account for roughly 100 GWh of demand by 2030 – resulting in an extra 81,000t lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) demand,” WoodMac says.

“That equates to 7% of available lithium supply that year.”

Not that bad, you might say. BUT WAIT.

“Not only is this an extra strain on an already tightening market, but lithium metal foils are high-performance materials with stringent purity requirements,” WoodMac says.

“So much so that the global production capacity is currently just 12,800t LCE, less than a sixth (1/6) of the capacity needed.

“Ultimately, the progress of either technology may be hindered by the increasingly clear signs of insufficient lithium supply to the market, or by a lack of infrastructure in the production of high-requirement, specialist lithium anode materials.”

Are weakening cobalt prices about to get a boost?

Unlike lithium, cobalt prices have crashed back to earth on stagnant battery sector demand.

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence says cobalt sulphate and hydroxide prices recorded massive losses of 24.4% and 21.4% m-o-m respectively in July.

Cobalt metal prices also fell 15.4% m-o-m “as consumers hold off purchasing additional material in anticipation of further declines”, it says.

But those declines may not come.

“Mounting production costs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) [the world’s largest cobalt producer] could halt or even reverse the cobalt market’s downward trajectory in the coming weeks, particularly if combined with a potential rebound in Chinese demand,” Argus says.

In the DRC, cobalt is usually a by-product of copper mining. Copper prices have fallen heavily in 2022, impacting profitability.

“For now, copper prices are still above pre-Covid averages, but further declines could lead to the suspension of some converters and mines in DRC, according to market participants,” Argus says.

Cost inflation is also having an impact on miners’ margins.

“Mines are likely to underperform. There are struggles finding acid-soluble ore and sulphuric acid prices have skyrocketed in recent months,” said an analyst for a DRC cobalt supplier, adding that “labour, diesel and trucking costs are also much higher”.

Meanwhile, a slight turnaround in Chinese cobalt demand in the coming weeks could also lend support to the cobalt complex, potentially lifting cobalt hydroxide prices and pushing up the value of cobalt metal and chemicals.

“I think the Chinese consumers are looking at the different end-users and seeing some green shoots, especially in EVs, but there is still a lot of material in the system,” one European cobalt trader told Argus.

WEEKLY SMALL CAP STANDOUTS

A good week so far.

Lithium stocks – especially the near-term producers—are bouncing back in a big way as more evidence emerges of a very long term lithium supply shortfall.

Leading the pack this week is Lake Resources (ASX:LKE) (+62%) which has erased much of its recent losses, caused in part by a short report and the unrelated but abrupt departure of long serving boss Steve Promnitz.

Close behind are other near term miners like Sayona Mining (ASX:SYA) (+46%), Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR) (+30%) and Arizona Lithium (ASX:AZL) (+26%).
